Plumbing Repair & Replacement Cost Guide for Valparaiso, IN
You want a number before you call, and a fair one depends on what the plumber finds. The ranges below are planning figures for common jobs, with the things that push a price toward the low or high end.
They are not quotes. A price given before anyone has seen the house is a guess, so quotes here come after diagnosis.
How to read these ranges
Each range comes from published national cost guides checked in October 2026, and was kept wide on purpose. We did not find price data specific to Valparaiso, so your own quote can land outside a range, and the call is where it gets settled.
The low end is usually the simple version of the job: easy access, a standard part, no surprises behind the wall. The high end is the same job with a complication, such as a cramped basement, an old fitting that breaks or a code item that was missed. The right-hand column names the complication that moves each job.
Parts that must be ordered can also change a price. Ask about them on the call rather than discovering them on the invoice.
Hot water costs
Heater jobs swing most on what the house already has. A like-for-like tank swap sits near the bottom. Moving to tankless, or changing fuel or venting, sits near the top.
| Job | Planning range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Water Heater Replacement (Tank) | $800 to $2,500 | Tank size, gas or electric venting and any expansion tank the local code asks for. See what goes into replacing a tank. |
| Tankless water heater installation | $1,400 to $4,800 | Gas line sizing, panel capacity and exterior venting. See what an on-demand heater needs. |
Drain and sewer costs
Where the blockage sits matters more than what clears it. One sink is a short visit. A main line with roots is a longer one, and a damaged pipe is a repair, not a cleaning.
| Job | Planning range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Drain Cleaning (Mechanical Snake) | $100 to $800 | Whether the clog is at one sink or the main line, and whether there is a cleanout to work from. See how a clog is cleared. |
| Hydro Jetting Main Sewer Line | $350 to $1,000 | Length of pipe, roots against grease and cleanout access. See when jetting beats a cable. |
| Trenchless Sewer Pipe Lining (CIPP) | $1,900 to $8,500 | Length lined, pipe diameter and the condition of the old pipe. See lining a pipe without a trench. |
A camera look before a larger sewer job shows what the pipe needs, and it keeps the quote tied to what is actually down there.
Pipe, leak and gas costs
These ranges are the widest because the unknowns are the largest. Finding a leak is one job, repairing it is another, and whatever it soaked is a third.
| Job | Planning range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Slab leak detection and spot repair | $600 to $4,500 | Detection time, foundation depth and whether the concrete is opened or the line is rerouted overhead. See how a leak under a floor is handled. |
| Whole-House Repiping (PEX) | $4,000 to $12,000 | House size, number of bathrooms and whether walls on one floor or two must be opened. See what a repipe involves. |
| Gas Line Repair / New Extension | $150 to $1,400 | Length of the run, pressure testing and the appliance connection. Buried runs run higher. See how gas piping is tested and fixed. |
Water damage that follows a leak is priced separately from the plumbing. The page on drying and cleanup after a leak explains what that work covers.
Fixture costs
Fixture work is the most predictable, and the main swing is the unit you choose.
| Job | Planning range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Garbage disposal replacement | $100 to $550 | Motor size, outlet access and the sink flange type. See when a disposal is worth replacing. |
A drip, a running toilet or a weak faucet is often a part rather than a replacement, and a plumber should tell you which it is before swapping anything.
What can raise a price in a Valparaiso house
Some price drivers come from the rules around the work, not the work itself. Three are worth asking about on any job that goes beyond a simple repair.
- Permits. Indiana plumbing rules require a contractor to obtain a permit wherever a local ordinance calls for one. Ask which office covers your address, the City of Valparaiso Building Department at 166 Lincolnway or the Porter County Building Department at 155 Indiana Avenue, Suite 311, and whether the permit is part of the quote.
- Digging. A repair that reaches the yard needs an Indiana 811 locate request at least two full working days before the dig. Ask who makes the call and whether waiting for markings changes the schedule.
- Which pipe is yours. Ask the utility named on your bill where its pipe ends and yours begins. The answer decides who pays for a service line or lateral repair.
What a written quote should list
A useful quote is specific enough to compare. These are the points to look for before you agree to anything.
- What problem was found, and how it was confirmed
- What is being repaired or replaced, and what is being left alone
- Parts and materials by type, not just by total
- Whether a permit, a locate request or a camera look is included
- How the opening is patched if a wall or floor is cut
- What the work comes with, in writing, and what voids it
If the plumber finds something new once work begins, ask for the change in writing before it proceeds. Reading common plumbing questions with short answers can help you frame what to ask.
When a quote looks far too low or far too high
A price far below every range usually leaves something out, such as the permit, the patching or the cleanup. A price far above it should come with a reason you can see: a photo from the camera, a reading from the meter, a part that failed. Ask for the reason, and ask what the price would be if the complication turned out not to exist.
